“Disagreement”

Disagreement is how we discover
what we think and who we are.

Never be afraid
to disagree with me, he says.

The sun is warm on our necks.
He pulls out a cigarette

to hand me in exchange
for a silent thanks.

Keep your secret.
If I could know I would not.

Faith is like the night—
belief without sight.

Be light
on your feet.

Then left the Father.
He walked through the graveyard

between dead stone and living flower.
Overhead the sky marked a dwindling
     hour

the breach that divides
memory from life—

I want his wisdom but can it come?
Humans require images of the harm

inflicted upon us.
I’ve come to believe this

adamantly.
We like to watch wild beasts

eat
raw meat

till their heads
drip red.

Till my arm stings to touch—
you cannot approach

lightly but as one does instruments,
a pipe organ or violin,

with intention of making wonderful
     music.
Pain in my life is music.

O physical form!
O Doom!
O that I am!
